When I Should Have Been…

I had a doctor appointment today that I was 10-15 minutes late for because “da man” didn’t wanna unshackle me & well because I was soaking in my surroundings. I think it was worth it, what do you think?

When I Should Have Been….

You should probably know that I’m late….as a person, that’s just who I am.  I’m not proud of it and I’ve been working to correct it but for the most part I’m just late.

Today, on this beautifully warm and sunny morning, when I should have been at work…

I was roaming the streets of the Upper East Side, stopping and smelling the roses, not in the actual sense because I have the world’s worst allergies (I can’t even remember the last time I was able to breathe through my nose), but you know what I mean.  I’m usually hustling and bustling on my 12 block walk to get to work from the bus, but today I was hyper aware of all the dope things I’m too in a rush to notice any other day.

Like this building, as many times as I’ve passed it I never noticed how it just stands out from all the other brownstone-like buildings on the block and just how cool it is *oh how I love a sitting window*:

I have noticed this next one because it’s kind of hard not to and I even gave it my own little nickname “the yellow brick road”.  This is the entrance way into the NY School of Interior Design.  Dead smack amidst all these concrete blocks is this little yellow brick road:

You wouldn’t know by looking at my mostly black, white & grey wardrobe that I looooooooooooove color.  This Gracious Homes window display was too colorful and fun looking to bypass without sharing it with you my friends:

Another thing that stood out to me was while stopping to take these pictures everyone was gracious enough to stop in their tracks to allow me to take all these pics.  I was totally taken aback at how cool that was…and they say us New Yorkers are rude, tuh!

Needless to say I was super late to work but at least I was in a really reaaaaaaalllly good mood.  Sometimes you just gotta time the time.

& a Cocktail: Jell-O Shots

This past weekend was the birthday sleepover diy decoration extravaganza (post & pics coming soon).

While putting together a list of things needed you know #1 was COCKTAILS and lots of em. Judge if you must but cocktails or wine of some form is needed when dealing with these 4 particular wise beyond their years, personality for days and days and days, snappy comeback, keep you on your toes 4 & 5 year olds. Just saying.

My sissy Kay put me on to this app/site called Yummly that has breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers and drinks recipes galore.  So I took to Yummly to get my drink menu together and find some fun recipes to try.  My thought was to have 1 shot and 1 drink on deck.  But these Jell-O shots were hands down the showstopper.

The recipe calls for:

  •  Whipped Cream flavored Vodka
  • Pack of Jell-O (I used orange and strawberry)
  • Milk
  • Whipped Cream
  • Rainbow Sprinkles

how simple is that!

  1. Place 1 cup of milk in a glass bowl (emphasis on glass bowl)
  2. Heat 1 cup of Whipped Cream flavored Vodka until it boils
  3. Once the Vodka begins boiling whisk Jell-O into the Vodka until it dissolves
  4. Then slowly pour and whisk simultaneously the Vodka/Jell-O mix into the glass bowl containing the milk
  5. After the mix gets a nice and creamy consistency pour into the silicone mold (or little plastic shot cups).
  6. Place in refrigerator and let set.
  7. Once set add some whip cream and sprinkles
  8. Enjoy!

***for one batch we used whipped cream flavored Vodka AND Hennessy to make it a little stronger and boy did it not disappoint***

This recipe is def a must have at any party or just to have in your fridge for those “just one of those days” days.

What do you think of this shot recipe?  Would you/have you tried?

Ohhhhh It’s Party Time!

It’s that time of year again.  Birthday party time!  Last year I told myself there was no use trying to fight the pressure and anxiety, I would just succumb to the party planning madness.  Pop some Xanax and drink a couple bottles of wine each day and just remain in a constant state of euphoria….for the entire month.

Birthdays aren’t what they once were.  When I was a kid I remember having and attending a couple birthday parties at McDonalds, each location was a little different so it seemed like I was going someplace I’d never been and having the best party ever.  But now kids birthday parties are a big fucking deal.  Huge (Pretty Woman voice).  I blame these damn well to do people on reality shows, they throw these massively ridiciously outrageous parties for their kids and turned it into a whole thing.  People started realizing kids parties and play spaces were a gold mine and an untapped market, charge an arm, leg and a foot and voilá chaos ensues.  Yup!  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

We thought we were off the hook this year because Cakes is in school now and we could throw a simple 1,2,3 party in school.  That is until she started discussing party themes with us and set her mind on a theme that was completely appropriate, super cute and not yet merchandized.

She wanted her theme to be of her current fav cartoon which is fairly new and therefore toys and the like haven’t started being produced just yet.  Of course we didn’t figure that out until after we gave Cakes the okay and got all hype.  Yeah we could jedi mind trick her into changing her mind but now I feel like this is a personal challenge and baby I gots something to prove.  I’m not a crafty person AT ALL, shit I bust a complete and total sweat at the mere thought of paper, scissors, tape or glue.  My mom on the other hand can see a picture, figure out the mechanics and produce an even better version of just about any and everything, I so envy her this very moment.  I guess craftiness is one of those things that skips a generation.  Womp wooooomp!

All I have to say is thank the good Lord for Etsy, Pinterest, Google and my sissies who are always willing to roll up their sleeves with me.  I’ve turned into a craftster, making t-shirts, stickers, cut outs, cupcake toppers, you name it we’re all over it.  The scary part is I’m really getting into this whole crafting thing and am excited thinking about all the finished products.  ME!  The girl who once rolled her eyes and would have multiple mini seizures just thinking about “making shit”.  I’m willing to deal with it all though, all for the love of Cakes!

Although she will have no idea what we went through to make this birthday happen or that we made most of the stuff on our own for that matter.  The fact that I know and the smile on her face will mean the world.  And so cheeers to making this crafty birthday my bitch!  😉

Cause a party ain’t a party til the crafts come through.

Now We’re Cooking: Hasselback Potatoes

I keep seeing recipes for Hasselback potatoes all over recipe blogs and sites.  As a potato lover I couldn’t resist giving it a try.

Again the ingredients are simple everyday ingredients that you probably already have in your fridge and spice rack:

6 russet potatoes

1 stick of softened butter

1/2 cup of olive oil

1/3 cups finely chopped chives (I didn’t realize I didn’t have chives until I had already started cooking soooooo they’re missing from my version)

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees
  2. Slice potatoes in 1/4 inch thick slices without cutting all the way through the potato

3. Mix the softened butter, olive oil, salt/pepper and chives in a bowl

4. Brush the butter/olive oil mix onto the potato, make sure to get in between each slice (warning: the mixture looked kind of gross and the consistency looked a little suspect to me but after brushing it on the potatoes it made a little more sense. it’s a little bit of a messy process)

5. Bon Apetit

I had to sprinkle a little more salt/pepper on after I took them out of the oven.

Confession: During the process I for sure thought I was going to have to title this post EPIC FAIL! Sometime around 30 minutes in the oven I checked on them and they looked dried out and I just knew that by the time it reached 55 minutes they were all going to be burned to a crisp.  Surprisingly, the inside were just right, nice and soft and the outside was a little crispy, the perfect combo.  While prepping the potatoes Cakes protested her dislike for potatoes (even though she could survive off french fries and mashed potatoes alone) after some persuading she tried the hasselbacks and loved them.  I’m sure it was partly because she was able to eat them like a finger food by peeling off each slice and partially because the skin was crispy.  Even Mr. Grumps had seconds (he ain’t low).

Have you or would you try this hasselback recipe?  Let me know what you think.

Now We’re Cooking: Chicken w/ Sundried Tomato Cream Sauce

Last night I tried this interesting looking chicken recipe I came across on Buzzfeed.com for Chicken with Sundried Tomato Cream Sauce.  2 things made this recipe appealing 1) it’s a one pot recipe (less dishes wooooot woooot!) 2) it calls for ingredients I can find in any supermarket (I’m really big on convenience when food shopping) 3) the chicken skin looked crispy and not soggy (I cannot stand soggy chicken skin *YUK*.  Oh wait did I say 2 things!

Anyway the ingredients required are as follows:

*(6) chicken thighs with skin

*3 tbsp butter

*4 garlic cloves

*1/4 cup fresh basil

*1 tsp dried thyme

*1 tsp dried oregano

*1/2 cup heavy cream

*1 cup chicken broth

*sundried tomatoes

Confession: using just salt & pepper to season chicken sounds like crazy talk to me, just doesn’t make any sense.  So I deviated from the plan where that part is concerned but besides that I stuck to the program.  And unlike any other recipe I’ve tried for the first time, it turned out looking exactly like the demonstration!

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Melt 2 tbsps of butter in pan.  Place chicken skin down.

3. Brown on both sides.

4. Set chicken aside and remove butter and excess fat from the pan

5. Add to pan 1 tbsp of butt, 4 sliced garlic cloves, 1/2 cup of heavy cream, 1 cup chicken broth, 1 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp dried thyme, 1/4 cup fresh basil and sundried tomatoes and stir.

6. Add chicken back to pan and baste chicken with sauce.

7. Put in oven for 25 minutes.

This recipe was convenient and DELICIOUS!  Mr. Grumps is still talking about it today.  I give this recipe 5 stars or thumbs up or whatever you give f*cking deliciousness!

Remake: Candyman

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is right up there with a few of my all time favorite movies.  I think I love movies with singing involved hence some of my other all time favorites being Rent, Grease…see what I mean?  Anywho, along with Pure Imagination, Candyman to me is the best song in the movie.  Who remembers?

Dope right?!  Well imagine my delight when watching TV this past Easter Sunday and seeing on an M&M commercial that Zedd & Aloe Blacc kinda sorta remade Candyman. They put a techno uptempo spin on it and I gotta say I loves it!  But what do you think?

Yay or Nay to the 2016 Candyman?  Did they do the original justice?

& a Cocktail: Crown Royal Apple & 7up

Today was a good day! I got out of work a little early and so did Cakes, I decided we would do something fun so egg coloring was on.  My sissy and my niece came over to make it a party and we got to coloring.  Well it was mostly us yelling at them to get their damn hands out the cups and stop fighting over the damn cups, it’s enough color for everyone and other miscellaneous yelling sessions.

After cleaning egg dye off of hands, wiping droplets off the floor and hiding from them in the bathroom I think I deserve a cocktail.  Tonight’s drink of choice is Crown Royal Apple which I’ve been dying to try and 7up.  The Crown Royal Apple smells amazing and tastes even better.  This cocktail is a must try….

Oh Hello!

Here goes nothing!

Okay I’m doing it.  I love writing with everything in my being but it’s been so long and so much has gone on that I am suddenly questioning my God given gift like I just lost it.  Shhhhh! A little secret…I started this blog a couple weeks ago and kept procrastinating because I’m so nervous.  I think I’ve been self sabotaging myself.  Like the other day I went to write a post and my laptop wasn’t charged, instead of plugging it in like a normal, sensible person would I just put it down. UNCHARGED.  Who does that, ME the SABOTEUR.

But I decided to cut the shit (as I like to say and you will hear me say often) because how am I gonna get the juices flowing if I don’t do something.  So this is me doing something!  Besides I have so much stuff to talk about.  Every post from here on out will be better.  Please feel free to comment on any or all of my posts and let me know how I’m doing.

Phew! First post *check*.
